Sweet or Sour: Supergood/Superbad

Residing outside of Japan has a few lot of downsides. especially for fanboys like me. One of these is not having first dibs on JPOP CDs as they are released.

Anyway, here's my take on Yamashita Tomohisa's first album. Super Good/Superbad. (Tracklist courtesy of loveasia)

Supergood? uhm....

Ok. First off, sales were a little disappointing coz I've always kinda revered Tomo as a star. Anyway, 100k+ ain't all that bad for a first CD, but really low as compared to his first solo Daite Senorita and Seishun Amigo. And particularly low for a Johnny.

But maybe its just the sucky timing that coincides with yet another single, and soon after a movie. Too much Tomo in so little time (hard to believe huh?) As for the music, I didn't like it all that much at first.

Supergood/Superbad seemed to be the kind of CD you purchased simply because you like the star.  But after a few weeks, the music grew on me. I still won't listen to it over most things Arashi, but it definitely has it's shining moments. I particularly like Friday Night, Tokyo Sinfionetta, Touch you and One Girl. Sleepwalking sounds very sweet as well. The tech people also found a nice way of blending Pi's not-so-Ohno-quality voice (hehe), into music that evokes the right feelings.

So, go buy it. It won't be a waste. In fact, after some time, you may agree that it's actually a real find. See people? Oricon figs aren't always everything.

Sweet or Sour?
